leading provider of rapid
SOA development tools for
mainframes, today
announced a formal
partnership encompassing

combination of Skyway SOA

Software's Ivory product
offers a new element to
the SOA marketplace -- a
solution that can build
new services, assemble
existing services, while
managing and governing
reuse across multiple
platforms from any type
of data source, including
mainframes.
By Anshuk Pal Chaudhari; Bijoy Majumdar; Sunny Saxena
Most organizations that
have tried have been
successful in
implementing a pliable
Service Oriented
Architecture (SOA)
paradigm. Analysts have
come out with strategies
to translate existing
applications into
SOA-compliant systems
using a staggered
approach. The rewards
reaped come in the form
of low-cost maintenance
and agility in their
business, along with
reusable and
self-contained services.
But there are still
challenges in this form
of service-based
architecture and
solutions need to be
devised.
At my firm, Infosys
Technologies, I have come
across several clients
who are actively trying
to explore, consider,
adopt, embrace, or become
completely immersed in
SOA. Here is a typical
call I've received, where
our client rep says,
'Ajit, we've got a very
critical meeting with the
CIO of company ABC. He is
very excited about moving
his entire organization
toward SOA. Can you come
and present our SOA
capabilities to the
client on Monday?'

There is more to Web 2.0
content than just Web 2.0
widgets. While some may
not know, XML is the
fabric of Web 2.0
applications. Web 2.0 or
Rich Internet
Applications are popular
due to the interactive
content on the browser.
Developers building these
applications will benefit
from increasing XML usage
beyond the browser widget
- bringing this XML
content into the data
server. By making XML
more integral to the Web
2.0 applications,
developers have a new
means for building
high-performance Web 2.0
applications more quickly
while maintaining the
flexibility in the design
for future data
management requirements.
IBM's Chris gruber will
help you learn how this
can be achieved. This
session is suitable for
audiences with basic
knowledge of XML.
Most companies,
especially from the
banking domain, develop a
large amount of their
software in C/C++, and
generally, they are not
interested in
redeveloping the code in
any other new generation
language, such as .NET or
Java, due to cost and
performance reasons. One
well known advantage [1]
to sticking with the C++
legacy application is
performance. Most
scientific applications
are intentionally
developed in C++ for the
same reason. But then,
integration of this
existing functionality
with the new application
is a big issue. The
solution to this problem
is incubating service
orientation into the
application architecture
and accessing the legacy
code by exposing it as a
service, based on open
standards so that it can
be used across various
platforms.
'It's clear that many of
the services we consume
and manage going forward
will be services that
exist outside of the
enterprise, such as
subscription services
from guys like
Salesforce.com, or
perhaps emerging Web
services marketplaces,'
says David S. Linthicum,
who will be giving a
session at SOA Web
Services Edge 2007 in New
York City in June.
