Symantec’s CEO To Step Down

According to his own predictions Thompson will be getting out before teeth of the recession bite really deep

Symantec CEO John Thompson, 59, the ex-IBMer who bit off more than he could chew when Symantec acquired Veritas for $13.5 billion three years ago, is going to retire at the end of the company’s fiscal year in March.

He will however remain chairman.

He will be replaced by Symantec COO Enrique Salem, who’s been running the company day-to-day and overseeing product development and sales and marketing since January.

Salem has had two stints with Symantec since 1990, leaving for five years to be president and CEO of Brightmail, an anti-spam house Symantec then acquired in 2004.

According to his own predictions Thompson will be getting out before teeth of the recession bite really deep.
