Analysts estimate 80 percent of today’s virtualized environments run on VMware technology. However, that landscape will shift over the next 12 to 18 months as more powerful processors, competing hypervisors, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and cloud computing take hold. Virtualization management will need to address heterogeneous environments that combine any number of different software and infrastructure platforms.
On the technology front, several things have happened. The AMD-V and Intel-VT processors have added virtualization extensions to the x86 server architecture that have removed much of the performance overhead incurred by emulation and also removed many of the barriers of entry into the hypervisor market. XenSource, now owned by Citrix, has seen its open source hypervisor technology accepted into the Linux kernel and adopted by open source leaders Novell and Red Hat. Microsoft’s Hyper-V is closer to becoming a reality, and VDI is more prevalent.
With more products aimed at more market segments, the hypervisor market will shift. European governments, which are mandated to use open source products, will adopt the Xen hypervisor. Microsoft-reliant SMBs will stay with Hyper-V; while enterprise IT will continue to embrace VMware. Many organizations will find themselves managing a combination of all three. Cloud computing will abstract these heterogeneous virtual environments even further.
Today, most virtualization management applications are either built on top of yesterday’s physical server management technology or designed to mimic VMware VirtualCenter. Neither approach will work in the long run. Virtualization management software is better off being designed from the ground up rather than simply trying to retrofit a dynamic environment into a static management application.
In this session Hyper9 CTO Dave McCrory will discuss the technologies and events that are transforming homogenous virtual environments into heterogeneous virtual environments as well as what must change with virtual management software in order to tame heterogeneous virtual environments.
