Best Practices for Building a Virtual Appliance Across Multiple Platforms

Virtual appliances represent a new opportunity to streamline and simplify software distribution for virtual environments

Virtual appliances represent a new opportunity to streamline and simplify software distribution for virtual environments. With a virtual appliance, software vendors can ship thoroughly tested, standard configurations that require minimal installation effort. In this session, Troan will discuss best practices on how to build virtual appliances including:

Building an integrated collaboration suite appliance.

Creating a virtual appliance image with a simple click of a button.

Reducing build size by creating a tailored operating system that reduces the amount of space to install, install time and the security exposure created when providing ongoing updates to the software.

Speaker Bio: Brett has over twenty years of experience in the software industry including CEO and CTO level positions as well as senior level positions in software architecture, engineering, product management, marketing, sales and corporate development. Prior to joining rPath, Brett served as CTO and Vice President of Engineering for Versata, Inc., a provider of business rules management products for enterprise application development which was acquired by Trilogy, Inc. in 2006. A serial entrepreneur, Brett has founded three technology companies including Verve, Inc., an early leader in the embedded business process engine space, which he brought to profitability and sold in late 2000 without external investment. Brett studied Computer Science and Psychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Service-oriented architectures (SOAs) have evolved over the past few years out of the original vision of loosely coupled web services replacing constrained, stovepiped applications throughout enterprise IT. Every major enterprise technology vendor today has developed its own SOA strategy, supported by innumerable mid-size companies and start-ups offering specific SOA aspects or entire solutions. This explosive growth in SOA technology is in response to a global demand--IDC estimates that spending on SOA services alone will grow from $8.6 billion to more than $33 billion by 2010.
