XQuery 1.0 Reaches Official Recommendation Status with W3C

XML query language takes another Great Leap Forward

After eight years of development, the World Wide Web Consortium announced this week that the XML query language, XQuery 1.0 has reached official Recommendation status.

This highly anticipated standard is predicted by many to be on course for the same kind of popularity - for querying XML documents - that SQL enjoys for querying relational databases.

It is gaining traction, with 40 installations currently in play and the big database vendors turning their databases into relational/XML hybrids.

One well supported, robust commercial XQuery implementation for XML is DataDirect's XQuery. "XQuery handles even large XML files (upwards of 20+GB)," notes Jonathan Robie (pictured), XQuery Technology Lead at DataDirect Technologies, "It also handles relational database and more," he adds.

Robie is a W3C XQuery Working Group Member and co-editor of the XQuery 1.0 Standard. He writes regularly for SOAWorld Magazine, and his most recent article was on "Complete Data Integration Through XQuery."
