"The Browser Should Never Speak SOAP," Says AJAXWorld Power Panelist John Crupi

Power Panel Line-up: JackBe's John Crupi, JSON Creator Douglas Crockford, IBM's Bob Zurek, and Matt Mihic from Rearden Commerce

The first "Power Panel" of AJAXWorld Conference & Expo 2006 just kicked off, with 4 industry experts led by AJAXWorld Magazine Editor-in-Chief Dion Hinchcliffe, discussing "Web-Oriented Architecture: SOA + The Web + REST."

"Building modern SOAs and Web 2.0 sites requires a design style that goes with the "grain" of the Web," said Hinchcliffe, as he opened the panel.

"REST, a natural extension of HTTP created by the co-inventor of HTTP, is getting a lot of attention these days because it's easy to work with, aligns well with the Web, and is very high performance," he continued.

Used architecturally, Hinchcliffe noted, REST is called Web-Oriented Architecture or WOA. But whither SOAP, the canoncial Web services protocol up to now?

The panel discussed this and and more, including:

- REST has been with us for a while, why is it taking off now?
- What's going to happen to SOAP-based SOAs?
- What are IBM, Microsoft, and BEA doing about REST support in their products
