Mobile Application Development at IDF 2013

Last week I (along with many other Intel Employees and customers) attended the Intel Developer Forum at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.  I was impressed with the range of mobile application development tools showcased, along with the new devices and other technologies.  In case you missed the conference, here’s a quick summary of some tools I saw and/or presented.

First, Intel’s software group released an updated version of the XDK (appropriately named “XDK NEW“) last week, and they showcased it on the HTML5 pavilion.  There was also a hands-on lab that allowed participants to develop multi-platform HTML5 apps from scratch.  In one of the exercises we showed how to consume an API that was surfaced by Intel® Expressway API Manager, presenting a legacy XML asset as padded JSON (a standard mobile application development convention).  In the Expressway booth we also showed an enterprise mobile application that we developed using the XDK and Expressway API Manager to allow employees to access data when and where it’s needed (more on that in a future post).

The Intel® HTML5 App Porter Tool was the other cool mobile application development tool I saw over at the HTML5 pavilion.  This utility lets developers import legacy IOS source code, transforming it to HTML5 and JavaScript.

Over in the security pavilion I saw some interesting demos of enhanced security for mobile applications, including an approach that factors in not just who is using the app but also the security characteristics of the device and server.  In another area I got to see some pretty impressive displays of apps built around the Internet of Things, surfacing data from a wide range of sensors and synthesizing relevant information for the user.  And in yet another demo I got to play a game on a laptop that was equipped with sensors that followed my eyes, using my gaze to control the action.

Finally, in our booth we were giving away a VisionMobile poster that illustrates the full spectrum of mobile application development tools used by enterprise app developers.  Click on the image below to print one for yourself, or we’ll be happy to mail you a hardcopy.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
Bill Schmarzo, Tech Chair of "Big Data | Analytics" of upcoming CloudEXPO | DXWorldEXPO New York (November 12-13, 2018, New York City) today announced the outline and schedule of the track. "The track has been designed in experience/degree order," said Schmarzo. "So, that folks who attend the entire track can leave the conference with some of the skills necessary to get their work done when they get back to their offices. It actually ties back to some work that I'm doing at the University of San...

If a machine can invent, does this mean the end of the patent system as we know it? The patent system, both in the US and Europe, allows companies to protect their inventions and helps foster innovation. However, Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be set to disrupt the patent system as we know it. This talk will examine how AI may change the patent landscape in the years to come. Furthermore, ways in which companies can best protect their AI related inventions will be examined from both a US and...
Enterprises have taken advantage of IoT to achieve important revenue and cost advantages. What is less apparent is how incumbent enterprises operating at scale have, following success with IoT, built analytic, operations management and software development capabilities - ranging from autonomous vehicles to manageable robotics installations. They have embraced these capabilities as if they were Silicon Valley startups.
