HTML5 and browser support - 2

In this post we take a look at the hyperlink in HTML5.
The hyperlink in HTML5 as in other versions is represented by 'a'. This has changed in
HTML5. There are,
* Permitted contents
* Permitted attributes
* number of constraints that list out obsolete attributes

The readers should read the W3C working Groups note here

In here we will see how a web page with a number of links gets displayed in the four
browsers (versions of browsers used are in the below link) we previously considred in here:

The 'a' tag can sorround inline or block content as described in the above w3C note
quoted here:

"Although previous versions of HTML restricted the a element to only containing phrasing content (essentially, what was in previous versions referred to as “inline” content), the a element is now transparent; that is, an instance of the a element is now allowed to also contain flow content (essentially, what was in previous versions referred to as “block” content)—if the parent element of that instance of the a element is an element that is allowed to contain flow content."

The following HTML5 was used in Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2013 Preview to look at how browsers responded and whether screen readers such as 'JAWS 14' could pick up the elements correctly. Of the tested browsers only IE10 and Chrome could be read with 'JAWS' and the other two browsers did not. I am not sure if the browsers support the accessibility features needed. The reading by 'JAWS' is a little difficult to understand unless you hear a couple of times over and over again. It is fair to say that Chrome fared a little bit better than IE 10 in that where as the reading was continuous from top of page to the bottom in Chrome it was discontinuous in IE 10.

All the browsers recognized the block as a single link however the rendering of the 'flow and phrasing content' was different in different browsers. IE 10 and Chrome performed the best as far as rendering is concerned,

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
