Inmedius®, Inc. reports that Viking Air Limited, one of Canada’s growing aerospace companies, deploys Inmedius S1000D software and services to convert, digitize and maintain its technical publication library of legacy de Havilland Aircraft DHC service manuals. By utilizing the Inmedius S1000D Publishing Suite™, a comprehensive solution set of easy to use modules that integrate authoring through publishing, Viking has successfully implemented a structured authoring system to publish paper-based ATA publications, while creating and managing an electronic documentation library.
In 2006, Viking acquired the type certificates of seven legacy de Havilland DHC aircraft, along with the commitment to maintain the original library of paper-based, ATA service manuals. Viking began working with Inmedius in 2007, and has since digitized the ten original, base DHC-6 aircraft publications into XML, as well as conversion of smaller service manuals common to the entire Twin Otter fleet. Going forward, Viking plans to continue to utilize Inmedius software and services to convert other DHC1 through DHC-7 aircraft documents.
“Compiling paper-based ATA publications can be very time consuming,” explains Dan Bartram, Software Configuration Maintenance, Viking. “Prior to implementing the Inmedius Publishing Suite, our authors were spending a considerable amount of time on revision management and page layout. Over the past couple of years, Viking has worked with Inmedius, using its S1000DauthorPro™ and S1000Dtransition™ applications to automate tasks that previously were time-intensive and costly. This has allowed our team of six to focus more on writing and less on formatting and revision management.”
Both AuthorPro and Transition are powerful, yet easy-to-use components of the Inmedius Publishing Suite that are integral to the success of Viking’s de Havilland library project for the legacy DHC aircraft. With AuthorPro, authors conform to complex S1000D and ATA requirements with this robust content creation software, enabling them to concentrate on technical content development instead of managing the final formatted and published outputs. Transition, the looseleaf, change page and S1000D publishing program, transforms S1000D source data into other format outputs or print materials. It efficiently produces structured Data Modules (DM), making it simple to go from S1000D SML to PDF or print.
“One of the biggest benefits of working with the Inmedius software has been seen through Transition’s change page management capabilities,” Bartram elaborated. “By understanding where content is placed on each individual page, Transition is able to perform a direct page comparison between revisions. As a result, Transition is able to automatically generate change page packages and up-to-date List of Effected Pages (LOEP). Viking is very pleased with Inmedius’ commitment to our success. We look forward to experiencing ongoing efficiencies working with Inmedius as we continue to maintain our ATA library.”
