'Package Design' Magazine's Second 'Makeover Challenge' Asks Design Firms to Build a New Look for Sugarless Sweets

MALVERN, Pa., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Lyons Media, publisher of "Package Design" Magazine, is now accepting votes for its second annual "Package Design" Makeover Challenge, a one-of-a-kind competition involving five design teams, a line of product packages in need of a new look, and integral reader involvement.

This second edition of the design contest - sponsored by Paxonix, a division of MeadWestvaco that provides software asset management solutions to the packaging field - features some of today's top package design professionals. The five teams are: Brand Engine, Sausalito, California; Goodwin Design Group, Media, Pennsylvania; Gravity, Cincinnati, Ohio; Tin Horse, Marlborough, Wiltshire, U.K.; and a student team from the Michigan State University School of Packaging, East Lansing, MI.

The five teams, which were originally profiled in the May 2005 issue of "Package Design" Magazine, have created new packages for five SKUs of the Hillside Candy Company's Golightly brand of sugar-free candy. The five redesigned packages are two bags, a box, a small tin, and a holiday acetate box.

Complete before-and-after photos and written accounts of each team's product makeover are presented in the July/August 2005 issue of the magazine, and 3D models of each package are viewable online at the "Package Design" Magazine website: http://www.packagedesignmag.com/. Designers at Brandimation, a package design, product development, and web-based solution company in Morrisville, PA, created interactive 3D images for the online voting experience.

Readers of "Package Design" will be asked to cast their ballots online before September 28. Attendees of Pack Expo Las Vegas will be able to cast their votes at the "Package Design" booth until the deadline.

"The participants in this year's Makeover Challenge are the creative cream of the crop in the package design industry," explains Christopher Lyons, publisher of "Package Design" Magazine. "This competition should offer our readers some excellent insight into the full process of redesigning a top consumer product."

Based on the tally of the votes, "Package Design" Magazine will reveal the Makeover Challenge winner in the November/December 2005 issue. In addition, a $5,000 student scholarship contribution in the winning team's name will be delivered to MSU's School of Packaging.

The major sponsor of the Challenge is Paxonix, a MeadWestvaco division that provides software asset management solutions to the packaging field. The design teams were able to use the latest version of their PaxPro software during the Challenge free of charge. The newest version, PaxPro 3.0, allows designers to create mission-critical, packaging-driven strategies to improve time to market.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
